'Beautiful cards, better lives.'
Scroll down to buy the lovely cards carefully hand made in Rwanda at Cards for Africa, a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO)
Each card is signed on the back by the cardmaker. The young adult card makers have lost both parents due to conflict or disease and they are often providing for and caring for siblings and other family members too.
Each card takes about half an hour to make, with the shapes cut and positioned by hand.
The price of the cards reflects the work which goes into them and ensures the makers receive a Fair Trade steady income and a clean, safe place to live. Card makers can earn more than nurses, soldiers and teachers in Rwanda.
Irene was 18 years old when she started work at Cards from Africa. Her father died in the 1994 Rwandan genocide and her mother died shortly after. She has no memories of the genocide because she was only four years old at the time. She hopes that Cards from Africa continues to grow so that she and others making cards will have more work.
